The RBT exam is in person only. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board ended remote proctoring on September 1, 2023, and as of 2026, there is still no online pathway. Every candidate tests at an authorized Pearson VUE testing site or a qualifying US military base.
That is the short answer. The rest of this guide covers what changed in the June 2026 RBT Handbook, because several widely repeated facts about this exam are now out of date, including some you will find on other sites.
If you are reading this because you want to work as a behavior technician rather than just pass a test, our careers page lists current openings across North Carolina and Virginia. Most people apply first and get their 40-hour training through an employer, which is how the credential was designed to work.
Is the RBT Exam Online or in Person?
In person. The BACB contracts with Pearson VUE to deliver the exam at authorized testing sites in the United States, Canada outside Quebec and Ontario, and Australia until January 1, 2027. There is no at-home option and no remote proctor.
Remote testing existed briefly. The BACB introduced it during the pandemic and discontinued it in September 2023 over exam security concerns. If you find a page telling you that you can test from home, it has not been updated since then.
The exam is also offered only in English, and translators are not permitted at check-in or during testing unless you have an approved accommodation.
What You Need Before You Can Sit for the Exam
The eligibility requirements changed for 2026, and the training rules in particular trip people up.
You must be at least 18 with a high school education or equivalent.
- You must pass a criminal background check and an abuse registry check, both completed no more than 180 days before you pay for your application.
- You must complete a 40-hour training that meets the RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline. It cannot be finished in fewer than five days, and it cannot stretch past 180 days.
- You must complete the RBT Initial Competency Assessment, effective January 1, 2026, no more than 90 days before you submit your application.
That five-day floor is new to a lot of candidates. You cannot cram the 40 hours into a long weekend. Our breakdown of how long RBT training takes walks through realistic timelines, and our guide to the RBT competency assessment covers what your assessor is looking for.
The 2026 application processing fee is $65 to the BACB, plus $45 to Pearson VUE for each exam appointment. Allow two weeks for application processing. Once approved, you have one year to sit.
What the Exam Actually Covers
The exam is now built on the RBT Test Content Outline, 3rd edition. If your study materials reference the RBT Task List, 2nd edition, they are outdated.
You get 90 minutes for 85 multiple-choice questions. Seventy-five are scored, and ten are unscored pilot items, and you cannot tell which is which, so answer every question as though it counts. Each question has four options and one correct answer.
Content Area | Scored Questions | Share of Exam |
A. Data Collection and Graphing | 13 | 17% |
B. Behavior Assessment | 8 | 11% |
C. Behavior Acquisition | 19 | 25% |
D. Behavior Reduction | 14 | 19% |
E. Documentation and Reporting | 10 | 13% |
F. Ethics | 11 | 15% |
Behavior acquisition and behavior reduction together account for 44 percent of the scored questions. Weight your study time accordingly.
One detail worth knowing: all questions are equally weighted, and your result is based on overall performance rather than performance within each content area. You do not need to clear a bar in every section.
How the RBT Exam Is Scored
Here is where a lot of published information goes wrong.
The BACB uses the modified Angoff method to set the passing score. That is a criterion-referenced approach, meaning a panel of certified subject matter experts judges the difficulty of each question, and the resulting standard is approved by the BACB Board of Directors. A new passing score gets set when something significant changes, such as a new test content outline.
What the BACB does not do is publish a numeric threshold. You will see "a scaled score of 200 out of 250" repeated across dozens of sites. That figure does not appear in the current RBT Handbook, and neither does a required percentage of correct answers. Treat it as folklore rather than a target.
The practical consequence is simple. There is no number to aim for, so aim for mastery of the test content outline instead. Chasing a rumored percentage is a worse study strategy than working through the six content areas until scenario questions stop feeling like guesswork.
You receive a pass or fail result at the testing center. To see your actual score report, log in to your Pearson VUE account and select View Score Reports. If you pass, the BACB emails you within about a week.
What Happens on Exam Day
Arrive about 30 minutes early. Check-in includes identity verification, agreement to testing center rules, palm vein scanning, and a digital photograph.
Bring one form of valid identification. Older guides say two, including an earlier version of this post, but the current handbook requires one government-issued, original, unexpired photo ID with your signature, showing your first and last name exactly as they appear in your BACB portal account. Any mismatch will get you turned away and your fees forfeited. If you are more than 30 minutes late, the same thing happens.
No personal belongings go into the testing room. Lockers are provided. Phones, watches, notes, scratch paper, calculators, food, and drink are all prohibited inside.
Two things that genuinely help and that most candidates do not know: every testing center provides a dry-erase board, and all centers provide earplugs on request, with some also offering noise-cancelling headphones. Ask at check-in.
You can take unscheduled breaks, but the clock does not stop, and you cannot leave the building.
Retaking the Exam If You Do Not Pass
The retake rules are frequently misstated, including in the earlier version of this article, so here they are as the handbook writes them.
You get a maximum of 8 total attempts within the 12 months following your initial application approval. After each failed attempt, a retake application appears in your BACB portal account within 48 hours. There is currently no fee for the retake application itself, though you pay Pearson VUE $45 for each new appointment.
You must wait 7 days between attempts. Not twelve months. The seven-day minimum is the only waiting period between ordinary retakes.
The 12-month figure applies in one specific situation. If you use all eight attempts without passing and there is still time left in your authorization period, you have to wait until that 12-month window closes before you can reapply. If your authorization simply expires, you reapply and meet whatever requirements are current at that time.
Between attempts, change your method rather than adding hours. Candidates who fail repeatedly are usually strong on definitions and weak on scenario reasoning, which is most of what the exam asks for.
What Changes After You Pass
Passing does not mean you can start working. Your RBT certification status begins as inactive. It only becomes active once a qualified RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator adds you as a supervisee in their BACB portal account. Until that happens, you cannot practice, bill, or call yourself an RBT.
Once active, you need ongoing supervision for at least 5 percent of the hours you spend delivering services each calendar month, including at least two real-time contacts, one of which must involve your supervisor observing you with a client.
Recertification is also changing. Through the end of 2026, RBTs recertify annually with a Recertification Competency Assessment. Beginning in 2027, recertification moves to a two-year cycle with 12 hours of professional development units required per cycle. If you certify or recertify in 2026, the two-year cycle is what you are heading into. Our overview of RBT certification requirements covers the maintenance side in more detail.
What RBT Certification Means in North Carolina and Virginia
BACB certification is national, but the rules that govern your day-to-day work are set by state payers, and both of the states we serve tightened theirs in 2026.
In North Carolina, ABA is covered under NC Medicaid's Clinical Coverage Policy 8F. An August 2026 NC Medicaid bulletin confirms that paraprofessionals must deliver interventions under the supervision of a Licensed Qualified Autism Service Provider or a Certified Qualified Professional, and that supervisors must directly observe paraprofessionals at a clinically appropriate frequency. Paraprofessionals without a qualifying certification, meaning RBT or ABAT, must be supervised specifically by an LQASP during the grace period set out in S.L. 2026-1. The updated policy also removes telehealth as an option for paraprofessional services, so your sessions are in person.
In Virginia, the Department of Medical Assistance Services is tightening documentation oversight. Its July 2026 bulletin describes guidance to providers on required ABA documentation and coordination with managed care organizations on periodic pre- and post-payment reviews.
That is a direct practical reason to take the Documentation and Reporting content area seriously rather than treating it as the easy 13 percent. Your session notes are what a payer audit looks at. It is also worth noting that the BACB states behavior technicians in the US would almost never qualify as independent contractors, so expect W-2 employment. Our Raleigh team and the rest of our sites hire on that basis.
Conclusion
The RBT exam is in person only, at Pearson VUE testing sites, and has been since September 2023. As of the June 2026 handbook, it runs 90 minutes with 85 questions, 75 of them scored, built on the Test Content Outline 3rd edition, with behavior acquisition and behavior reduction carrying the largest share. The BACB sets the passing standard through the modified Angoff method and does not publish a numeric threshold, despite what most sites claim. You get eight attempts in the 12 months after your application is approved, with a seven-day wait between them. Passing leaves your certification inactive until a supervisor adds you, and from 2027 recertification moves to a two-year cycle with 12 professional development units. In North Carolina and Virginia, supervision and documentation rules tightened in 2026, which shapes the job as much as the exam does.
